Week 2 Term 1 2019

Welcome to Year 2K 2019!!!!

What a first week we had! We all had a busy yet fun time learning new routines, rules, ways to learn and new things about being a big Year 2 student.  Most importantly, we have gotten to know each other more and have worked hard to build our 2K team together.
Here are (nearly all!) of the new super 2K Team members photos taken on our first morning :

In Mathematics we have begun to review the place value of 2 digit numbers and building upon our learning of the parts of numbers in the hundreds and thousands.  We also began our weekly problem solving task and using data to create a whole class birthday graph to determine which month in our class was the most popular to celebrate a birthday.
Below are a few messages about key events and information that we would like to share with you before our Parent Information Evening next week (Tue 19th Feb). The time of the meeting is TBA.

Homework
The children are very excited to be bringing their homework folders home this afternoon to commence homework for the term!
We are having a staggered start with homework over the next fortnight and the Targeting Mental Maths books are the only homework the children will need to complete  this week. Later in the week, we will introduce the reading folders to the children, as well as a reading log to enable them to be able to commence with nightly readers.
Spelling homework will be explained at the Parent Information Evening and will begin from Monday next week.
If your child does not have a homework folder in their bag this afternoon please have a look at home to see if they have left it behind from last year.

Targeting Mental Maths Homework Due Dates

The children are expected to complete only one unit of their Maths homework weekly. Each unit will be due on a Friday and time will be provided on Friday gathering time to review any tricky parts or unfinished sections and hand in.
Unit 1: Due Friday 15th Feb (Week 2)
Unit 2: Due Friday 22nd Feb (Week 3)
Unit 3: Due Friday 1st Mar (Week 4)
Unit 4: Due Friday 8th Mar (Week 5)
Unit 5: Due Friday 15th Mar (Week 6)
Unit 6: Due Friday 22nd Mar (Week 7)
Unit 7: Due Friday 29th Mar (Week 8)
Unit 8: Due Friday 5th Apr (Week 9)
Unit 9: Due Friday 12th Apr (Week 10)

Homework Folders

As part of morning routine the children will be asked to bring in their homework folders daily when entering the classroom in the morning along with their crunch and sip. On a Friday the folders will be left at school, as there will be no homework assigned over the weekends.  Homework will be organised and sent home each afternoon Monday to Thursday. There will be a tub placed at the front of the classroom for all of the folders every morning.

Parent Help

We will be commencing a Parent Help Roster later this term, which we will discuss further during the Parent Information Evening.

Maggie Dent

There are still tickets available for the Maggie Dent Presentation in the hall tomorrow night. Maggie will be presenting 'From the Sandpit to Adulthood'. If you are interested in attending, please purchase a ticket from the office.

Book Club

This month's book club orders are due Wed 20th February.

Family Details and Swimming Enrolment

These forms went home last Friday (white for family details and purple for swimming enrolment). Please edit any family details if necessary and return the purple swimming form with the relevant details for upcoming swimming lessons.
You will find a cream little letterbox next to the communication book inside the doorway of the 2K classroom where you can leave any signed notes, information or absent slips throughout the year.

We look forward to seeing you all at the parent information night next Tuesday in addition to gathering time each morning.  Please feel free to email us if you have any questions at all.
