Week 1 Term 2 2019

Welcome back to school everyone! I hope you all enjoyed some special family time over Easter and made the most of the beautiful April weather we had over the break.

A few things to note as we begin this term:

Spelling HomeworkThe children will be receiving new spelling lists this week and you will notice that many of them have different coloured lists due to being in a new spelling group this term. If your child has the same coloured words they are repeating their previous spelling group to consolidate unknown sounds.  Please feel free to discuss any questions you have about their spelling or the synthetic phonics spelling approach (Diana Rigg PLD) we use at OLC.  We ask that you continue to use the yellow Look, Cover, Write, Check spelling pads most nights (aim for 3x or 4x week) for your child to write out their spelling and sight words or alternate with reading them out for your child to record on scrap paper or spell aloud back to you.

Maths HomeworkIt is expected that Unit 9 to be completed this week for homework. Maths books will be handed back to the children tomorrow.  We will continue with aiming to complete a unit each week and handing them on Friday mornings for me to review.  I appreciate your time to mark your child's work as they complete it so that they can receive immediate feedback.  Please feel free to continue to asterisk concepts that your child finds difficult so that I can acknowledge and cater for this for future planning and teaching.

They will also be bringing their old Spelling Journal from Year 1/2 as we will be using our new spelling journals for the remainder of this year so please remove these from their homework folders/bags as these do not need to be returned back to school.

Casuals for CatholicsThis Friday the children are invited to attend school in casual dress to raise funds for those in need within our local community. The children are asked to bring a gold coin donation for wearing their casual dress.

Bunnings IncursionNext Tuesday morning 7th May we are very lucky to have Bunnings visiting us to help prepare something for Mother's Day. If there are any Dad's who would like to help us with some woodwork on the morning please write your name down on the parent help roster.

Mother's Day BreakfastThis will begin at 7am in the Hall on Friday the 10th May.  Thank you to the P&F for their generous support and organisation of this special event to celebrate our wonderful mums.

TERM TWO LEARNING
This term our English focus will be on non-fictional texts and Information Report text genre.  We will be learning about author's purpose and non-fiction text features.  In Science, we will focus on biological studies, specifically living things that grow and change and life cycles.  In HASS our focus will be on the earth's continents and oceans and features of world maps and globes.
In Mathematics, we will begin the first half of this term focusing on the Number strand and the operations of addition, subtraction, fact families, commutative properties of number sentences and solving missing parts/addends in given sums. We will also develop our bank of mental strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems including using doubles, doubles plus or minus one, facts, bridging to tens, making 'friendly numbers' and using number lines.

Last Week of Term One...
The last week of term one was a busy but fun one!  The Year 2 classes were lucky to participate in a combined incursion provided by ProFootball.  This was so much fun practising our soccer skills.

We also had a lovely time sharing our narratives with our audience - the preprimaries of OLC! We were so proud of the real stories we wrote for our PP friends and reading them aloud to them.

Finally on the last day of Term 1 we had a science and art day together with 2S, where we applied our knowledge about our science topics of push, pull, friction and gravity and investigate a car rolling down different surfaces.  We are starting to learn about 'fair testing' in science and ensuring that we only change one thing (variable) and the importance of keeping all other things the same so that our results are accurate.  Our investigation also required us to use our collaborative team work skills to share ideas, listen to others and problem solve.  What a great bunch of scientists we have in Year 2!

We hope you had a lovely break and cannot wait to see all of the gorgeous 2K team members ready for a wonderful new term tomorrow!

Kind regards and God Bless,
Penny and Kristy
