Week 10 Term 1 2019

Week 10!  Wow what a term it has been!  So many new friendships made and strengthened, so much learning and so many events and fun we've had in 2K.  It has been a wonderful first term and I'm sure you are all ready for a holiday break at the end of the week.

Thank you so much for your time to come in and discuss your child's progress with myself and Kristy over the last two weeks.  Please feel free to let us know if you would like to follow up anything else or have any other questions at all.  I will be sending home a an A3 overview sheet of all of of the sight words from Stage 1.1 to 3.2  to all students this week.  It is recommended by the PLD program that students should be around the level 2.1/2.2 stage in their personal reading and spelling sight words by this time of the year in Grade 2.  You will be able to see what level your child is up to by identifying what column their personal words are in.
I will also be sending home a phonic sounds sheet that contains some common phonic sound graphemes (letters) and matching picture symbol to those students that we discussed in the parent meetings.  I suggest that you keep this sound sheet slipped inside their RED reading folder to refer to before, during and after home reading sessions.  This sound sheet will extend their bank of known phonic sounds and assist their decoding skills when trying to read unknown words.  If we did not discuss a sounds sheet but you would like one, please let me know via email and I'll pop one in their homework folder over the next few days.

Homework for Week 10

Spelling - please continue to complete the spelling words (both coloured phonics sheet with 8 words and their 5 personal sight words) most nights.  Continue to aim for four nights throughout each week to enable your child to pass their weekly test.  I also recommend sometimes reading your child's words out loud instead and them writing them on a scrap piece of paper if your child is not working well using the Look, Cover, Write and Check spelling practise method.
Please note that if your child is in the RED phonic spelling group with the list words on the red paper then they will have two lists this week to focus on for the last week that have been stapled together.  This is the oi/oy sound.  The general rule of when to use the different words is that "oi" is in the middle of words that have one syllable and "oi" is never found at the end of a word.  "oy" is spelled at the end of a word or it can be used at the end of a syllable.  Please aim to do spelling each night this week from Monday to Thursday as we will have our final spelling test on Friday.  This end of term assessment will contain all of the spelling sounds taught and learnt this term to determine which phonic concepts have been learnt and maintained to determine which PLD spelling group your child will be in next term.

Mental Maths - Due to extra spelling for so many students, this week will be a catch up week for any students that are not up to and completed Unit 8.  If your child is up to date, then take this week with a little extra focus on two spelling lists and personal sight words instead.  I will collect all of the Targeting Mental Maths that are up to date tomorrow but please let me know if you would like to keep yours for this week or over the holidays if you are a bit behind.  We will begin Unit 9 for the first week back in Term 2.

Home Reading - This will continue each night throughout the year with the exception of school holidays.   Please continue to complete the Reading Log each night or morning for the next night.  If you are reading a library or book from home, please still complete the log with the title and any comments if you would like.

Week 10 Topics
Writing - We are starting to finalise and publish our narrative stories ready to read to our pre-primary audience at the end of the week.  We have loved being authors this term and the opportunity to write stories that we think our PP readers would love.  We can't wait to share these with our parents too at the end of the week when they are finished!

Reading - Our daily reading groups are continuing to be a special time where we can work on our reading stamina and build our reading brains.  Each group and member of 2K has special reading strategies that we have been working on to help us become even better readers.  Please ask your child their reading strategy that their group has been working on.  We will continue to build our CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expanding Vocabulary) reading wall next term as I continue to model and explicitly discuss more reading strategies.

Maths - Our final week in mathematics focus on the the probability strand where we are learning about the likelihood of an event happening.  We are building our maths vocabulary to understand the terms: certain, definite, likely, unlikely, even-chance, impossible.  We will also revise our previous concepts including place value of three digit numbers, expanded notations (hundreds+tens+ones) and reading calendars.

Science - Physical Science: our final week will look at all of our knowledge we have gained about forces in our world - push force, pull force, friction and gravity.  We will be learning about the importance of fair testing when investigation scientific questions and keeping variables the same (but changing one thing!).  Keep an eye out for some gravity fun investigations!

Thank you for your continued support and assistance.
Kind regards and God Bless,
Penny and Kristy
