Week 1 Term 3

Welcome back!

Welcome back to Term Three! I hope you all had a lovely holiday and the students are feeling refreshed and renewed after their two week break.  I absolutely loved seeing all of the beautiful 2K kids back with wonderful stories about their holidays and they were so ready to settle in and get back into our learning and teamwork.

What's On This Term?

English
This term we are looking at a variety of topics. Our writing focus this term will look at the persuasive text genre and what we can include in our own written texts to persuade the reader.  From what I have heard from our shared stories this week, we are already very experienced in trying to convince our parents many different things with many persuasive reasons including why we should stay up later, why our Mums and Dads should buy something special!  We will be continuing to do our daily reading groups and we will be focusing on the Comprehension aspect of our CAFE reading strategies, starting with 'identifying the author's purpose' in the first two weeks.

Mathematics
Our Maths focus this term will be multiplication, division, telling time, money, fractions and maps. We will be using hands on materials to develop our knowledge.
For the next fortnight in Mathematics, we will be focusing on the concept of multiplication.
In Year 2 this means that we will be learning about what multiplication represents: repeated addition of the same/equal groups.  We will also be learning about representing these repeated groups as arrays with rows and columns and solving worded problems that are multiplication based.

HISTORY
In our HASS subject we will have a focus on how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples maintain their connection to their the country and place. We will also be looking at the history of significant people and their impact on our lives.

SCIENCE
In Science we will be focusing on the huge impact waste has on our environment and looking at the 3 R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. We will be studying the concepts in the Chemical Science strand this term, exploring how materials can be used for different purposes and how they can change. Get ready for some super fun experiments this term!

ARTS
In Visual Arts we will be learning about the elements of art including colour, line, shape and form.

HOMEWORK
Please continue to spend 10 min each day listening to your child read aloud.  An easy way to check for comprehension is to ask them after a paragraph what it was about or to summarise what has happened next.  Please spend some time discussing new or interesting words to continue to add to their reader and writer's brains!  We ask if your child can also complete their phonic spelling list and five PLD sight words 3x or 4x a week in anticipation for their spelling test on Fridays.  This can be completed in their yellow Look, Cover, Write and Check pad, verbally or read out loud by a parent/sibling and recorded on scrap paper.
Targeting Mental Maths
Please continue to work with your child on each unit, giving them instant feedback by marking their work when they have finished is a wonderful way work with your child to see how they are going with their maths understanding. Please highlight or circle any questions that your child may have found a little tricky and I can write this down to review with them at a later date.  Students should have completed Unit 20 this week and Unit 21 next week (Week 2).

Mission Markets
Our annual OLC Mission Markets-  celebrating Our Lady of the Cape Feast Day-  are fast approaching (Thursday 15th August - Week 4)  This year, both of the Year 2 classes will be running a pre-loved stall.  We will be starting to collect donations from next week so please keep an eye out for some goodies (books, toys, etc,) that are no longer wanted in your household but would be highly desirable by other OLC students!  We would also love a couple of Year 2 parents to assist on the day with pricing and selling.

The P&F Plates have arrived, if you ordered one please collect it from the office.
